The highlights for Plasma Dialer include one bug fix and two new features. First off, Powerdevil no longer suspends calls. (Bhushan Shah: plasma-mobile/plasma-dialer!31) The two new features are that it is now possible to send DTMF tones and send USSD requests. DTMF tones can be sent during a call and can be used to navigate the menus of certain automated calling systems. USSD requests, also called "quick codes", can be used to request the current pre-paid balance from the mobile phone operator, as well as other data. If you depend on proprietary mainstream mobile messenger applications, banking applications, use loyalty or travel apps, consume DRM media, or play mobile video games on your fruit or Android smartphone, then the PinePhone Pro is likely not for you.
Compared to mainstream mobile operating systems, Ubuntu Touch has a wholly unique navigation scheme and design language that is similar to modern smartphones, but very different. This may be because Ubuntu Touch is rooted in desktop Linux, not Android. Once you've learned its quirks, it's a powerful system that's surprisingly polished.
This is a relatively new project, so while postmarketOS can boot on over 250 devices(Opens in a new window) you won't find every feature supported on all the handsets. Of the 11 primarily supported devices, calls only work on six, and the camera only on one. Notably, postmarketOS runs on several Pine64 devices, as well as the Purism Librem 5 smartphone.
At the moment, one of the more popular products among open source enthusiasts is the PinePhone. Although not a flagship device by any stretch of the imagination, this is a full-on open source smartphone that is supported by all major Linux phone projects. In fact, just recently KDE announced its Plasma Mobile platform now supports making phone calls on the Pine Phone; although that might not sound like a big deal, it is to those developing the product.
first plasma mobile i have tried out, and it was simply unusable. I was not able to activate mobile data, when clicking on the checkbox it just went to the page asking for access point details. I was not able to shut it down or restart phone unless typing it into search box. It was also slower than phosh and app launcher needed excessively long press before it registered scroll input. All UI buttons suffered from the same, needing to press, instead of just quickly tap, to have reliable input. OSK keyboard lacked all other arrow keys except left (wtf?) 2ff7e9595c
